James Doyle Penrose (Jr.)

The son of James Doyle Penrose (Sr.) of Carlow and Robert Bowles of Dublin's daughter Anne, he was a successful painter whose work often reflected his Quaker faith (see some examples below).

He had three notable sons:

Sir Roland Algernon Penrose, a surrealist painter and friend of Picasso and Salvador Dali, who was even more famous than his father; 

Lionel Sharples Penrose, was a British psychiatrist, medical geneticist, mathematician and chess theorist, who carried out pioneering work on the genetics of mental retardation;

His eldest son, Alexander Peckover Doyle Penrose, inherited the family estate in Norfolk.  He led a campaign that saved the 15th century Guild Hall of St. George in King’s Lynn, and saw to its restoration and gift to the British National trust. He also convinced his Aunt Alexandrina Peckover into donating Bank House (now Peckover House) to the National Trust.

James Doyle Penrose's work included Victorian Portraiture but some of his most famous works were based on his Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) faith.
