The Worshipful Company of Joiners and Ceilers of the City of London
The Joiner's Company goes back to the 1300's as a fraternal organization of woodworkers (joiners) originally. One of it's functions is to promote high standards for the craft and the development of master craftsmen. This would include the master carvers who produced the fine woodwork featured around the alters in the churches and cathedrals.
In the early days of printing and publishing, printers were considered to be joiners due to their carving of the plates used to produce the prints. In the earliest days these plates were actually made of wood and the engravers would have had much in common with wood carvers.
