Jan. 4, 1532 (old calendar, so actually 1533 by modern calendar) John Bolls of Stratford at the Bowe (Stratford atte Bow) in the county of Essex Esquire

Body to be buried in the high quyer (choir) of the church of our lady in the parish of Brimley

To the high awter (alter) there in the house of the blessed sacrament my gown of damask to make a vestment thereof and to the said alter all other things necessary belonging to the same vestment for a priest to sing withal

Also to the said alter for ornaments to the same 13s 4d

To the said church towards the repair of the steeple there 4 ....

To the high alter of St Leonard the newry church there in the said church a vestment of bruge satin with all things to the same belonging

To my lady prioress of St Leonards 20s and a ....

To very nun of the same place for to sing dirge for my soul and all christian souls 15d

To the Sir Roger 6s 8d

To 2 of my said lady priests 2s to be divided between them to pray for my soul and all Christian souls

Also I will have a stone laid upon my grave and thereupon to be written in Latin the year and the day of my death with this clause Jesu have mercy Lady help

Also I will have a stone of marble of 2 foor square set in the wall nigh unto my grave with my picture and my 2 wive Anne and Julyan and the picture of the Trinity and of St John Baptist before me in the said stone with the names of mine ancestors and these pictures and writing to be made in Latin after the best manner

Also I will that on my burying day and also on the 15^th day after and on the 30^th day of every of the said days be delt in alms in the church of Brymley 4 pounds to pray for my soul and all Christian souls

Also I will three trentall (?) songs for my soul and all Christian souls within the year next after my burial except at the year day after my burial

I will have one of the said trentall song on the same day

Also for the discharge of the souls of my ancestors if they have negligently forgotten the performance of any bequest wherewith they were charged these parcels following first to Keldon alias Kelvedon in Essex church 40s

Also to the church waike (?) at Gosberton 20s To the church of Haugh 40s

Also to Drybe (?) Casseby Thertherby Aby Kegysby (?) and Olsseby (?) every one of them 3s 4d

Also I will have a stone to be laid upon my grandfathers grave at Makeby and another stone upon my father’s grave at Haugh

Also to Robert Bolle 20s and to Robert Newhouse 13s and also a mass book of ..... to Haugh church aforesaid

Also to my sister Katerin Bolle therefore 6 pounds 13s 4d to be paid at the day of her marriage, until she be married Arthur Darcy and my Uncle George Fitzwilliam to have the keeping of the said hundred .... and if she die before her marriage then the said 66£ 13s 4d (yes, the Will does say 6£ above and 66£ here, likely the clerk who transcribed this file copy of the Will made the error) to William Bolls and Lyon Bolls to be divided between them

Also to William Bolls 40£ and he to be made apprentice in London and when he cometh out of his years to have the said 40£

Also to Lyon Bolls 40 ....

Also to George Bolls 10£ and he be made a Canon at Markby Abbey

If any of my said brothers die before the age of 21 years their portion to be divided amongst the then living

The said Kateryn Bolls my sister have two featherbeds two coverings two pillows one mattress 6 pair of sheets whereof three pair to be of fine canvass and three coarse canvass three table cloths whereof two be fine and one coarse two dozen napkins half a garnyssh (garnish?) of pewter vessels one pot one pan of brass a spytte a pair of little cobertts (cupboards) Also the said Kateryn to have my ring on my finger and my little pot of silver

All the residue of my household stuff to Julian my wife and the said Julian to deliver to Kateryn all the said stuff before (listed) at such time as the said Kateryn requires the same

To Thomas Bolls my ....  (priest?) 3 pounds

A priest be found to pray for me my ancestors and all Christian souls in the church of Haugh for one whole year and he to have for his wage 5£ 6s 8d

To Richard Bolls my brother all my plows and plow gear at Rothewell and Haugh with all implements of house there in my chamber and at Phelop keeping

Also I will that he have my mares and foals in Holland

Also to Jane my maiden to her marriage, she is 10 years old, 10£

Also to my brother Richard Bolls all my raiment siverde (silver?) and buckles except my damask gown

All the residue of my goods debts and chattels moveable and unmoveable before not bequeathed my will fulfilled be equally divided among my brothers and sister

My wife Julian have to her and to her assigns for term of her life for and in the name of her joynt^r (jointure) according to the covenant and agreement before made between me and Master William Roche my father in law the manor of Keldon otherwise Kelveydon Hall with the advowson of the church of Kelveydon aforesaid in the county of Essex The mans of Yultey (?) in Holland county Lincoln and also all those lands and tenements in Pynchebeck in Holland aforesaid and all my lands rents and tenements in the county of Lincoln called Gosberton with all and singular their appurtenances

Also I will that as the money and goods be received for the performance of my said bequest and legacies afore rehersed (?) that the said Arthur Darcey and my said Uncle Fitzwilliam have the custody of the same to those (?) of this my will above written

Also I will that if this my forsaid will be not according to the form of law or that there wyse or hereafter come any ambiguity or doubt by any word clause or sentence comprised in the same my last will for lack of plain and due making of the same that than my will and intent is that the same ambiguity or doubt whatsoever it be shallbe explained and made clear by the said Master Darcy and my said Uncle Fitzwilliam according to their discretion or by the survivor of them

Also I the said John Bolls for the execution and performance of this my last will and testament ordain and do make my trustee and faithful executor my brother Richard Bolls and Master Thomas (blank space) Also I make my supervisors and overseers of this my last will Sir Arthur Darcy and my Uncle George Fitzwilliam

Also I will that the money and my cheyne that I have in my house be in the keeping of Master Bolls and Master Massee Bakers to the coming of my brother Richard and they to deliver forth money for my burial as is in my will appointed the rest and cheyn to deliver to my brother Richard

Also I will that my mother have my silver pot with the cover

Item I bequeath to Sir Arthur Darcy a gold ring with a ruby that I had sometime of him

Also I will have a priest to sing for me two years in the church of our Lady or Brymley and he to have a vestment bought of black chamlet with all that thereto belongith for him to sing in and he to have for his wage 13£ 13s 4d sterling

Also I will to Mater Roche a black gown my wife another my brother Richard my sister my brother William and Thomas Bolls my .... (looks like servant) every one of them a gown

Also I give my wife grandam 13s 4d and to her daughter 6s 8d

In witness whereof and that this is my last will and testament I the said John Bolls the year and day above written have subscribed the same with mine own hand per me John Bolls
