Bowles in Killesher and Cleenish Parish, co. Fermanagh

Back to The Bowles of Fermanagh

Note: I have used the Bowles spelling thoughout this page although the 'w' is often dropped in the source references and even Bowls and Bolls occasionally appear.  There seems to be no significance to the spelling of the surname though as both Bowles and Boles frequently appear for the same individuals.

I would like to thank and acknowledge local historian and genealogist, Viola Wiggins, for the help I've received sorting out these Bowles lines.

These two parishes are being examined together as the Bowles in both parishes were the tenants of the Earl of Enniskillen whose estate, Florence Court, originally overlapped both of these parishes.

There are two likely possibilities for the origin of these Bowles in this area.  I have been told that the family's own tradition is that they arrived here from England as soldiers in the army of William of Orange in the late 1600's.  Another possibility is that they arrived even earlier from England or Scotland as tenants of the Cole family who later became the Earls of Enniskillen.

In 1600 Queen Elizabeth I gave orders for the defeat of O'Neill, O'Cahan and other Ulster Chiefs who had rebelled against her rule.  Mountjoy landed troops under the command of Sir John Bolles of Haugh, the ancestor of many of the later Bowles lines in England (see Sir John Bolles at Dunnalong Fort, co. Tyrone).  In 1607 the Northern Irish Earls fled Ireland for asylum in France under the protection of Rome and left Ulster in English hands.  To consolidate their holding, James I awarded huge areas of land to loyal followers and ordered the "plantation" of Ulster with English settlers.  By 1609, Enniskillen was under the military command of Captain William Cole who was awarded huge tracts of land around Enniskillen and was instructed to build a new town on the ruins of the old one.  He brought over English settlers with building skills and paid them with grants of land within his estate.  As even the earliest Bowles references in Cleenish and Killesher were on land owned by the Cole family we have to consider the possibility that they may have arrived in this way.  However, the Muster Roll of Fermanagh taken in 1630 does not list any name even similar to Boal, Boles, Bowles, Bolle etc.  After 1630 the mass plantation was over and new settlers arrived mainly on their own initiative either by migration from other Irish counties or from England and Scotland.

The first Bowles reference we have found in this area are from the Poll Book for co. Fermanagh 1747 - 1763 which listed all the male Protestant land owners in co. Fermanagh who had assets worth a declared value of 40 shillings or more which were the requirements to be entitled to vote.  Women, Catholics and anyone with assets less than 40s could not vote.

Bennet Bowles of Dornogagh in Cleenish parish , Freehold registered Feb. 8, 1749

Then we have the 1788 Poll of Electors:

The 1788 Poll Book shows Thomas and Patrick Bowles at Knockageehan, Killesher parish (note: the two sets of townland spellings probably indicates that two different clerks registered their land; it's not likely that they had two lots each) and an Alexander Bowles who lived at Fingreagh in co. Leitrim but who held the Bowles land at Dornogagh.  As this is one generation after the 1749 record, Alexander is very likely Bennet Bowles' eldest son who may have moved on to his own land in county Leitrim prior to his father's death and inherited the land later.  Thomas and Patrick may also be younger sons of Bennet's or they may be the sons of another Bowles who may have also lived at Knockageehan but whose assets were less than 40s and so was not recorded in 1749.  They almost certainly would be some relation to Bennet Bowles though.

See also The Boles of Fingreagh, co. Leitrim who were almost certainly a branch of this line.

Next we have the 1796 Freeholder's Register for co. Fermanagh which shows that Thomas and James Bowles held land at Knockageehan and there is no listing for a Bowles at Dornogogh.

The 1796 Flaxgrowers list mentions a Thomas Bowles of Killesher parish as qualifying to be given one spinning wheel as an incentive to grow flax.  ref.

From 1823 to 1838, every landholding in the entire county was assessed for the purpose of setting the tithes which each landowner would pay to support the Established Church (the Church of Ireland).  The list is not exhaustive as many categories of land were exempt from tithe assessment.  However Bowles appear in the following Tithe Applotments for county Fermanagh:

The Poor Law of 1838 established a system of Poor Law Unions across Ireland to provide "accommodation" to the destitute poor in workhouses paid for by a poor tax levied on local landlords.  In order to set the tax evenly, the Valuation Office conducted the first full survey of all property owners in Ireland between 1848 and 1864. The survey, known as Griffiths Valuation, was named after Richard Griffith the Director of the Valuation office at the time.

What We Can Sort Out

The Bowles line had a continuous presence in this area from at least 1749 until modern times.  As can be seen on this map Bennet Bowles holding at Dornogagh in 1749, and later held by Alexander Bowles in 1788, was very close to Thomas and Patrick Bowles' holdings at Knockageehan in 1788, to John and William Bowles' holdings at Macken and Clonathumper in 1828, to Thomas Bowles holding at Drummaren in 1834, to John, James and William's holdings at Calkill, Correen and Lisdivrick in 1862 and to Bowles family holdings at Knockageehan, Shanmullagh, Killesher, Gortatole, Rossaa, Killycreen and Cloonatumpher in the 1911 census. All these townlands are within an approximately 6 mile by 6 mile area.  The unusual given name Bennet appears again 100 years later as a witness at a Bowles marriage in Knockageehan.  I believe we can assume a family connection and we have worked out some of the branches in this area although I don't yet know enough to start a family tree which would connect them up.

(note: much of the following is only a working tree based on 'best guesses' as I have not yet been able to confirm much of the following with actual source references. Please don't copy or re-post this initial attempt to sort out these Bowles.  If you have something to contribute to this tree please contact me at my email address given on my Home page.  Any help would be greatly appreciated and I would be glad to credit you on the page.)

The Bowles of Knockageehan

This line is discussed on their own page at The Bowles of Knockageehan

The Bowles of Rossaa

This line was physically close to Knockageehan and also has a link to the Wilson family but I can't be sure that they were connected.

The 1901 census of Rossaa in Killesher parish:
The townland had 3 houses. The James Boles house was a 2nd class house built of stone or brick but with a thatch or wood roof, had 3 rooms and 3 windows in the front.  It had 5 outbuildings including a stable, cow house, dairy, piggery, fowl house, barn and turf house and James Boles held it of K. Wilson of Lisbofin.

A second house was occupied and held by a Ellen Gildea and the third house was occupied by Robert Wilson who held the land.  It was a 2nd class house of stone or brick but with a thatch or wood roof, had 6 rooms and 3 windows in the front.  It had 7 outbuildings including a stable, a cow house, a dairy, a piggery, a fowl house, a barn and a turf house.

The Bowles of Lisdivrick

The only references I've found have Andrew Bowles being assessed for his church tithes at Lisdivrick in 1828 and William Bowles holding a house and land there in the Griffith Valuations in 1862.  However there was a baptism at the Killesher Church of Ireland of an Elizabeth daughter of Andrew and Peggy Bowles in 1827.  The William Bowles holding the land there in 1862 was almost certainly Andrew's eldest son and heir.  The given name Andrew then appears in the next generation in nearby Rossaa townland bringing up the possibility that James Bowles of Rossaa was a younger son of Andrew and Peggy's.

"Ould Jemmy and his brother Andy were both employed by the Earl of Enniskillen. Andy was a water bailiff and Jemmy a woodsman. Fred also worked for the Earl and used to beat the game for the shoot."  A personal communication from local historian Viola Wiggins who also thought that this James Bowles may have been brother of John Bowles of Knockageehan (the one who married Anne Jane Wallace).

The Bowles of Shanmullagh and Drumaran

In 1862 James Bowles was holding 34 acres at Drumaran from Thomas Armstrong.  Thomas Armstrong also held land at Gortahurk West in the Griffith Applotment in 1862.  Cloonatumpher where we find Bowles in the 1901 and 1911 censuses is in Gortahurk which could indicate a connection beween these Bowles and Thomas Bowles of Cloonatumpher born about 1841 the son of a John Bowles although I can't see how they can fit into the same tree.

There is a memorial stone in the Mullaghdun Church of Ireland Cemetery which reads 'In loving memory of James Bowles, died 29th Oct. 1880, aged 63 years. Also his wife Catherine died 31st May 1911, aged 84 years. Their granddaughter Anna E. Collum who died 29th Sept. 1926, aged 20 years. Also their son Thomas died 12th December 1944, aged 84 years. The Boles of Croaghrim

Local historian Viola Wiggins tells me that there was also a Francis Boles (known as The Bog Road Frank Boles) who lived in Croaghrim but was originally from co. Cavan and was not related to the other Bowles in this area.  I found a likely reference for a Francis Richard Boles who was the son of William Henry Boles of Belturbit, co. Cavan.   Viola and John Wilson both have personal memories of The Bog Road Frank Boles.  They tell me that he was a delivery driver for Armstrong Grocers and that he often played the accordian at social events.  They both also recalled the tragic death of their daughter Kitty (Kathleen) at age 17 when she was struck by a car in Enniskillen when she and her 17 year old cousin Lorna Boles from Newtownbutler were walking home after a Millie (My Boy Lollipop) concert at the Silver Sandal ballroom.  Viola recalls a daughter Selina who may have married a Burleigh and that Frank's son (name withheld for privacy) is still now resident on his land in Croaghrim.  There is a memorial stone in the St John Church of Ireland Cemetery in Florencecourt for Francis Richard Boles, Mary Winifred Boles and Kathleen (Kitty) Boles.
