Sir George Bolles of London's Family Tree
Back to Sir George Bolles of London, Grocer
George Bolles b. ~ 1538 Gosberton, Lincs. (parents: Thomas Bolle (third son of Godfrey Bolle of Gosberkirke) and Jane Winter (George of Northington, Leicester))
See The Bolles of Gosberton Family Tree for where this tree fits in at 2.1 George Bowles (Sir)
The following section is here for discussion purposes only. The generally accepted family tree is below.
Theory: George's marriage to Joan Harte at age 41 leaves a possibility that he may have had an earlier marriage which has yet to be documented. The people in the tree listed here as potentially being from a theoretical first marriage are all known to have had many elements in common with George and were almost certainly related to him in some way, whether from this potential prior marriage or as his cousins or nephews not too far removed, exactly how has yet to be proven.

marital status but it does not refer to George as a widower;
Joan was indeed a widow, she had m. German Gates in 1577who had died a
year later;
if George had been married previously you would expect to see 'widower' on this
marriage license; however this is a transcription of an old record and it may
just have been an incomplete transcription; Gates was transcribed as Gales)

of the month; In
the St Andrew Holborn register Feb.
24, 1652/53 (p. 104 of 118 in the same register)
it’s
likely that this register was copied over from an earlier book and one of these
entries was incorrectly made, Anne’s baptism possibly having been only recorded
as Feb. 23, 1651 (based on the old calendar) and under the new calendar
standards that would be now written Feb. 23, 1651/52 which by today’s calendar
would actually be Feb. 23, 1652; the clerk doing the transcribing could easily
have become confused) m.

Sept. 1, 1621 St Swithin London Stone in Sir John Harts Vault
The burial register says
he was buried in his father-in-law Sir John Hart’s vault. That vault is at
the upper end of the south aisle but George is known to be buried in a new
monument built by his wife on the south side of the chancel which would become
their family vault and which is still in good shape today. It seems that he was first laid to rest in his
father-in-laws vault and was moved to his own vault on Mar. 4, 1621/22.
This move was made without obtaining an affidavit from the archbishop but note
was made in the register that instead the family had paid 50s to the church to
use for its poor. We know about some other
family burials even though they are not recorded in the parish register as an
inventory was taken of the bodies in the Bolles family vault on April 18, 1679:
Memorial that on the 18th
of April 1679 a view was taken in the vault in the south side of the Church of

1659 Elizabeth dau. of Robert
Bolles, deceased Jan. 29, 1663 Sir George had acquired the
estate at Scampton through his wife's inheritance from her father but their son
John seems to have been the first to actually live there. Most of his and
his son Robert's church functions (many baptisms, one marriage and several
burials) were performed at the little family church at Scampton. They
account for all of the Bolles entries in the Scampton register except for the
marriage of a Margaret Bolles to a William Cooke there in 1656 and the baptisms
of another entire Bolles family with the father a William Bolles as well as
William's and seemingly his wife Margaret's burials there while the family was
still young. William Bolles bur. Oct. 16,
1658 Scampton
How were William and Margaret related to John?
