A
Proposed
Family Tree for the Feltus Family of co. Carlow
Back to
The Feltus Family
of Carlow
Note: this is a
proposed tree which fits in and accommodates all of the known
references but it does not contain documented links between some of
the generations. However, any assumptions
which have been made are noted in the tree where they occur.
This is a working proposal for developing their tree as more facts
are gathered. Should anyone have any problems, suggestions or
corrections concerning this tree, please contact me (for my email
address see my
Home page).
I would welcome any help sorting out this
very complex family tree. However, please note that my
interest is limited to the Feltus family lines in county Carlow only
particularly up to the point where they crossed my own Bowles line.
Note: be careful with the
town and parish names, there are lots of references online
for the Feltus family at Dunleckney, co. Carlow but that is only the
parish name and it was a large parish. Both of the churches
actually in Dunleckney townland had been closed and abandoned by
1817 although the burial ground continued to be used. New
churches were built in Bagenalstown where Beauchamp Bagenal of
Dunleckney was trying to build a new modern showpiece community.
While in Bagenalstown they were still called the parish churches of
Dunleckney. The records were kept in the registers there for
any birth, marriage or death in the entire parish. To make it
harder there were also small chapels in many of the townlands where
a Minister or Priest would visit occasionally and catch up on all
the local events to be performed. In most cases those records
no longer exist although some of them were then transcribed into the
parish records at a later date sometimes including the townland
where the event actually occurred but not always. So a Feltus
baby born in Kildrenagh was possibly baptized there but the event
was recorded in the Dunleckney parish register at the Bagenalstown
church. So transcribed records could state that the child was
"of Kildrenagh", "of Dunleckney" or of "Bagenalstown" with equal
accuracy. See the map in
The Feltus
Family of Carlow
Note:
be cautious with the
significance of the spelling of the surname
, according to
Edward MacLysaght in The Surnames of Ireland (1973), Feltus was a
local corruption, of comparitively recent introduction, of the
English Felthouse found in counties Carlow and Wexford (in the late
1700's, early 1800's the name spread to many other counties).
In a very small area, the name appears as Feltus, Feltis and Feltuce
all in the same period and with multiple spellings in the same
family. It does not imply separate family lines any more than
their religion does. That occurred when a Church of Ireland
Feltus male married a Catholic woman and the children were raised in
her faith as was common in Ireland.

Henry Feltus in Ireland so he is a possible candidate
for the well documented Henry James Feltus b. Dec. 25,
1775 co. Carlow, m. Martha Ryan Apr. 19, 1794 Dublin,
son Edward b. Jan. 25, 1795 Ireland and the family then

Feltuce b. ~ 1737
(age 71 at death in Jan. 1809)
(or
still slightly possible this
could be a cousin
of
Cuthbert's rather than his brother,
but some
close
relationship is certainly indicated)
m. Elizabeth (b. before 1746)

1.2.1.1.3.1 James Feltus b. Apr. 1, bp. Apr. 4,
1841
Bagenalstown, Dunleckney parish
(I'm not confident about putting this birth here as his
father was recorded as James Feltus, farmer, of
Kildrenagh and wife Sarah; however of the two known
James at Kildrenagh, James Sr. was about 71 in 1841 and
his wife was Edith not Sarah while James Jr. was only 11
in 1841 so it could have been this James in Richard's
line (originally of Ballywilliamroe) who married a Sarah
and farmed at Kildrenagh just a mile away; no proof of
that yet though)
1.2.1.1.4 Maria Feltuce b. Dec. 14, bp. Dec.
19, 1813
Bagenalstown, Dunleckney parish, co. Carlow
(recorded as daughter of Richard
Feltuce and wife Anne (?);
she probably goes here as a nice potential fit,
Anne could be an error in the original register)

confirmation at Carlow on Sept. 26, 1821)

I also received some
Feltis family of Ontario history notes from a Feltis descendant in
Quebec but after the initial contact I didn't receive
any further information so the following is the best
that I could do from a few online source but no real
research has been done yet for them. I would really appreciate any more
information on this line.
Feltis (possibly Henry per online trees but I
can't find a source record that confirms that)
(emigrated to America about 1821 and settled in Ontario,
Canada; James and Henry remained in Canada but William
settled in the US)
1. James Feltis b. 1815
Ieland, possibly in Carlow (age 44 in 1859 on his
gravestone)
m. Susan Duff (b. May 23, 1822 Ireland) ~ 1843
1.1 Henry Feltis (a hotelkeeper in Avening) b. ~
1845 (19 in 1861 census)
m. Amelia (Minnie) Sikes (b. May 22, 1864 Avening)

Pansie Feltis b. Oct. 15, 1890
Nottawasaga twp., Simcoe co., Ontario
m. Isabela Monroe ?????
1.1.? James Henry Feltis b. Apr. 20, 1893
Nottawasaga twp., Simcoe co., Ontario (registration
shows mother
Isabella Monroe but states father was Henry Feltis,
hotel keeper of Avening; this is from an original
document and the registration was made by Henry so it
should be correct; an illegitimate child?)
1.1.4 Nellie Feltis (possibly Helen May Feltis) b.
1895 Ont. (cannot find birth registration)
1.1.5
Erma C. Feltis b. 1897 Ont. (this birth was not
registered although she appears as age 4 in the 1901
census; in 1940 her birth was finally registered as Irma
Christina Feltis by her mother Amelia Sikes (then
remarried as Dew) with the birthdate Mar. 12, 1902 in
Avening and the father as James Henry Feltis of Avening;
it seems strange that her mother was incorrect about the
hear of the child's birth; the 1911 census of Toronto
North shows Amelia Feltis as head of the household,
marriage status single (not as widow), with all these
children (Edith, Maud, Pansy, Nellie and Irma) except
James Henry, in this record she has Irma's birthyear as
1897)
